Blogging for Profit

Most bloggers use amateur blogs as opposed to professionals, though I am not sure what a 'professional' blog is. If you are blogging for profit, whether as an amateur or professional, then you are best advised to run your blog from your own website. This involves downloading the blogging software to your web space.

This however is a personal opinion, and many people prefer the simplicity of operating their blog from a blog host such as Blogger, run from Blogspot, or Wordpress from Wordpress.com. There is little to do other than to register and make your posts. The only negative is a lack of individuality and formatting of the look of the blog and the tools that you can use on it.

The majority of people who use the internet for fun, as opposed to business, believe that they have few opportunities to make money from their blog. Their blog is to communicate with others, and to express their views online in a way that was not possible prior to around the turn of the millennium. Sure, blogs were in existence before then, but mainly in specialized applications, and it was sometime between 1998 and 2001 that blogging changed from personal diaries of internet 'experts' to what we now regard blogging as being.

However, anyone who has a blog (reminds me of a Cilla Black song) can use it to make money, or if that is against your ethos of using the internet for fun, then to 'cover your expenses' as our councillors, governors and other governmental individuals like to express it! As they do, you can cover your expenses very, very well if you utilize the monetization possibilities of blogs as they can be used.

To repeat, in order to do so to the maximum of your ability, you must run your blog from your own web host. Most amateur blogs are created using Blogger from the Blogspot site or Wordpress from Wordpress.com, but if you can run your blog from your own website, then you have a lot more flexibility in the content of your blog than otherwise.

In fact you get many more benefits other than the possibility of profit by uploading blogging software to your web space (I am now going to use the term 'website' for web space since that is more familiar to most people, though the terms mean different things). If your blogging software is to your own website rather than that that of a blog provider such as Blogger or Wordpress, you have a lot more flexibility in how you want to format your blog, and in the features contained within it.

Let's look at what you get if you upload Wordpress, for example, to your own website. In order to do so you must have control over a MySQL database, that most good web hosts provide, and know how to use an ftp program. Otherwise it is plain sailing to upload the software. What you get is the ability to edit the CSS and HTML that determine the content and appearance of your blog posts, your sidebars, headers and footers. An immediate obvious benefit of this is the ability to add Adsense blocks that bring income to your blog.

Another is the possibility of adding links to any affiliate products you are promoting, and in fact links to anything you want your visitors to link to. These could include your websites or other blogs, in addition to adverts of various kinds. You can offer these in permanent pages, at the start or end of each individual post, or even within posts, though the most effective adverts and Adsense blocks are those included in the sidebars and footers of each post.

Another significant benefit that many bloggers find they get by downloading the software is that they can upload any of thousands of page templates for their blog that are totally editable. You can use Photoshop or a clone to edit the graphics, mainly the header, to customize it exactly for you, and can also edit the entire html to render the template unique to you. That is not possible with a blog hosted by the blog provider.

You can add any of thousands of widgets to your blog, another facility not open to you if you run a provider hosted blog. These widgets range from automatic SEO, thru auto XML site-map generation to blog pinging and literally any feature you could wish for. It is the ideal medium to advertise your product or service, and make money while you sleep or when you are on vacation. Imagine waking up in the morning, checking your bank balance, and finding a lot more there than when you went to bed!

That is blogging for profit, and it is not difficult. Amateur blogs can be used for profit as well as the professional blogs. There is no distinction if you are hosting your own blog. You can make money 24/7 while you sleep, and your widgets can also include an opt-in form that builds up your email list from those that are interested in your product or niche, but not quite ready to purchase. Keep in touch with them while you sell to others.

That is one great benefit of blogging.

Picking Your Products to Sell Online

Here's a good article outlining some of the things you should be familiar with when choosing a product line for your online business.

Successful internet marketers invariably follow this sequence when deciding what products to sell or promote:

· Find out what people want
· Supply a product which fills that need
· Get their customers to buy that product

It really does all come down to that simple sequence of events: too many beginners put the second one before the first one, and then wonder why they can’t sell anything. It’s no use being an expert on esoteric subjects like the nocturnal habits of whales - no one is interested. It is much better to be an “almost-expert” on something which is much more popular, like a particular breed of dog.

So, how do you find a niche market? The first thing to do is to find out what is hot at the moment, or what is perennially hot. That means doing some research, and this can be as simple as going to the local newsagents and looking at the magazines there. You now know that they have a loyal following, or they wouldn’t be published. If the topic interests you, buy a few copies and look in the ads at the back. If you see the same ads appearing issue after issue you will know that those ads are attracting buyers. Advertisers will keep changing the format of their ad until they find one that drags in the buyers, so those repeating ads are successful ads.

You could also go to eBay and see what is selling there, what people are searching for. Another quick and easy source of hot topic research is to go to Amazon - they too have a list of their best sellers. Join lots of forums and look for popular threads like “How do I …………(whatever)” Check out the replies - you could print them all out, completely rewrite them into a logical sequence, use your eBook compiler and eBook cover software and you will probably end up with a good selling product.

You will also need to find out the competition in that market, by using a keyword analysis tool. I use a product called Micro Niche Finder which I find invaluable, but Google has a keyword research tool on their home page, and you could also use a free trial of Wordtracker. Don’t worry if there is a dominant product on the market, especially if it’s relatively expensive, in fact that could be a good thing. Go to a site like Rent-a-coder and ask for a quote to do a “lite” version of the expensive market leader. Get the software written and you now have a top selling product that you know people were prepared to spend big money on.

There is a caution with the really popular markets, especially if you intend to use Adwords, which are by far the quickest method of getting visitors to your site. For instance the Adwords bids on a popular search term like “weight loss” would be way out of your league.

You should also beware of markets where there is little competition - ask yourself why there is no competition. It is highly unlikely that it is because no one else has though of it, it is much more likely that there are no buyers in that market. This raises an important point - your aim is not to find a market where there is no competition, but to find a market where you can outperform the competition that is there.

Therefore, four factors need to be taken into consideration are:

· Not enough demand - you won’t sell anything
· Too much competition - you’ll get lost in the crowd
· Adwords bids in your market are too high - the returns won’t justify the expense
· Not enough general interest - you must have something people are searching for in the search engines.

Strategic Internet Marketing- Increase Your Sales

Getting your online advertising seen takes both skill and a lot of research. Here is a great article that explains some of the ways that you can increase your chances of getting your ads seen by the right people.

With millions of websites out there being visited by millions of computer users, how can you make sure that your ad can be seen by your target customers and that your leads will be followed by these users? Here are a few tips.

1. Place an ad on the websites frequented by your target customers. Before doing this, you need to define who will be your target customers. Placing an ad on sites that they usually visit will increase the possibility that your ad will gain the attention and will be followed your target customers.

Also, consider the website's search engine placement, traffic, external linking and the other ads placed on it. External linking will determine if there are other sites that link to this site. This will mean that people can get to the site where your ad is placed, even if they are browsing a different site. Check if many of your competitors have ads on this site.

2. Placing ads on some sites cost some money. However, there are also sites that can place a link to your site, product or service in exchange of having their link being displayed on your site. This is also true about the newsletters sent by site owners to its mailing list members regularly.

Also, having helpful links placed on your site and having sites link to your pages help in boosting search engine ranking. This is similar to making a statement that your site's content is important that other sites have links to your web pages.

3. Pay-per-click (PPC) is also a good method in Internet marketing. You will only need to pay for the ad if the link is clicked. If you prefer this method of advertisement, make sure that you are using services that set limits on daily expenses. There are also services that help you determine effective keywords and monitor the PPC results.

4. Choose your domain name wisely. It is still being debated if domain names matter when it comes to search engine placement. Whether it does or not, having product related domain names help consumers remember your domain, that they can go back to your site even without the links.

5. Make sure you have useful content on your sites. While keyword density is important in search engine placement, having useless information or annoying repetition of keywords will not increase your customer's confidence in your site. It may even affect your sites traffic and can get your site removed from search engines. So make sure that keywords are used strategically.

6. When thinking of keywords, think like your target customers. What do you think are they going to search so they can get to your site? Also, use specific keywords or key phrases. Submitting a single word or a very general phrase to a search engine will not get you to the top of the search results compared to submitting specific keywords that describe your product and services perfectly.

7. Track your ads. Always check how much you have spent on placing links on frequently visited sites and on PPC. There are services that allow you to monitor PPC transactions and how many of these end in sales. You always need to consider if the ads that you have placed on these websites are getting you to your target consumers and if these ads can lead to revenue.

One final tip on marketing products and services, sell the benefits. It will help your marketing strategies a lot if you highlight the benefits of choosing your products and services instead of merely discussing the product specifications. Product specifications may not mean much to customers, unless they know what these stand for (how these specifications affect the quality of the product or service).

Many people say getting to the top of search engine results is difficult since millions of websites exist, which can be using the same keywords. While this is true, this doesn't mean that your website has to stacked under your competitors' websites when presenting search engine results. Strategic advertising and linking, together with useful content, can also get you to the top of the search results.

Picking the Right Niche Market

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Much has been written about niche marketing and the many advantages that this can provide for a successful online venture. If you do decide to go this path, it is important that you pick the right niche market for your business. Read on for more.

In business, you only want to play in a niche market you can dominate. To find that niche, you must first look within yourself.

What are your passions? Hobbies? Strengths?

What do you love to do? In what areas do you excel?

Picking something you are passionate about is vital. Passion provides purpose, instills courage and inspires perseverance. You can't become great at something you don't care about, are scared of or will quit when things get tough.

And business is tough. You're going to experience difficulties no matter what area you choose. So choose an area that makes pushing through the problems worth the effort. Otherwise the problems will overcome you rather than you overcoming the problems.

If you're not sure what you're passionate about, think back to your childhood. What did you dream of doing? Who did you dream of being? Chances are those dreams are still alive inside you; they've just become buried over time. Resurrect them and make them happen.

If you're not sure what you're strengths are, ask your friends and family. They've been around you enough to know what you're good at. You probably don't even realize your strengths are strengths because it comes so naturally to you!

Once you figure out what you love and are good at, you need to narrow your focus. Where in your niche can you be the best in the world?

By claiming a niche within your niche, you are seen as a leader and thus have a competitive advantage over anyone who tries to encroach upon your territory. When you're the leader, everyone else is perceived as a copycat.

Pursuing something you love is only half the equation. The other half involves marketplace research:

-Does your niche provide enough revenue for you to be profitable?
-Can you reach your target audience?
-Can you sell and resell your customers?
-Do your customers have enough money to afford your expertise?
-Are other people selling similar products?

If you can't find any competition via sites such as Google or Clickbank, it's probably because the market for your product does not exist.

If that is the case, you need to dig deeper within yourself. What else are you passionate about? What else are you good at?

Keep searching until you find an area where you can both leverage your strengths and make money. Then take immediate action!

Open Your Zlio Shop Free

As I have posted before, Zlio Shops are an excellent and best of all FREE way to start your own online business. Simply sign up, pick your products and you are done. The commissions that you earn off of this setup are decent and the store design is really nice and easy to master. I have set up my own shop and have had good returns with it.

There are several factors that will determine your success with this program. First and foremost is choosing your own niche market. Why try to set up a shop that sells books when you can set up a specialized bookstore that sells only Harry Potter books. This fact is so important and often overlooked by many people selling online today. Secondly, you must promote your store in order to get site traffic. This can be accomplished in many ways. You can submit your site to the search engines, for one. Beyond that, blogs and the various social networking sites are great (and free!) resources.

Give Zlio Shops a look. It costs nothing to open and can give you great experience in the world of online retailing. Click here to give it a try.

Make Money with Affiliate Marketing - Finding Your Niche

Following up with the last post, here is a great video that deals with affiliate marketing and niche markets.

Niche Marketing- What You Need to Know

One of the fundamentals in online success is determining the market for your products and services and one of the bedrocks of online marketing involves developing your niche markets. Read on for a great overview of this topic.
How To Find Hot Niche Markets
by: Dan Farrell

Working out what your niche market will be to start your home business is something that can elicit much excitement. This is when you can put all those great ideas you have had for your business into a plan of action. Give yourself a number of options to work over. Some will be great and some won't fit. Get more than one so you always have a back up when you start a home business.

Look to 3 sources for ideas:

* A hobby you love: You won't find many hobbies from which you can't build a business. And since you enjoy doing it, it won't be tedious to "go to work" every day. When you pick something for your business that you sincerely like, you will have fun at doing it.

* Your experiences: In life we go though many experiences and you can use these to build a business. For example if you have raised children you can then put all your parenting experience together and start a business related to parenting.

* Your talents: Everyone has one or more talents within them. Dig down and see what yours are. You can start a freelance business using your talents.

Defining your niche market:

1. List out some ideas then put them in the order of what you like the best.

2. Go to the site listed here and put a key word into the overture suggestion tool box: This will bring up the amount of searches that have been done for your keyword and will represent demand.

3. If you search out that same key word on Google search engine http://google.com then you will see websites supplying that item and you will know how many competitors are out there that will be competing with you when you start a home business.

4. If you find a topic that is demanded in quantity but low in the suppliers, you will then make money. This should be your special market for which you do your niche marketing. You will make more money with a niche market as you will reduce and sometimes even eliminate competition. Go through your list of ideas until you narrow it down to about

5. Then go through them again and see which one will fit into a niche market.

Establishing your USP:

Once you have found the concept that fits into a specialized or niche market it is time to establish your USP, Unique, Selling, Point. This is when you will take your idea, and see how you will make your business uniquely different from your competitors. Often neglected, finding the USP is something that new business owners need to do to set their item above the competition. Online businesses are very competitive and you have to stay ahead of the game.

There are two reasons you need to set yourself up as different from others:

1. Get ahead of your competitors

2. To clearly define to your potential customers why your product and service is better than your competitors.

Deciding on your business model:

Part of your business concept will not only be consolidating your ideas but also choosing your business model. There are a few that you can choose from:

* Affiliate marketing-Getting involved with affiliate programs will target your efforts

* Network marketing (MLM)- again this will target your market and idea.

* Marketing-taking the product and selling it

* Service- you should use your talents, which includes freelancing.

You can see there are a number of things you will have to do to get your business concept into operation. But it's worth it to plan and take care in developing it. It will be your foundation, after all.
